THE MONTH OF MAY
Across the UK, May temperatures average a daily high of 16 degrees Celsius (60 degrees Fahrenheit) and a low of 7°C (44°F).
The best time to visit London is March through May, when the temperatures are mild and the city's parks are green and blooming with flowers. However, late spring – along with summer – is also the prime tourist season, so hotel and flight prices reflect the tourist surge.
The mid-season is from April to May and early September to October. September through October is a great time of year to get cheap plane tickets to London and it can be the best time to visit. Off Season: The British take their vacations mainly in July and August, so the resorts are very crowded.
May is the fifth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian Calendars and the third of seven months to have a length of 31 days. May is a month of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere.
May is named after the Greek goddess, Maia, who is also identified with the Roman goddess of fertility, Bona Dea.
The Greek goddess Maia was one of the Pleiades, the companions of Artemis. This Maia was the mother of Hermes, the messenger of the Gods. But the Romans had yet another goddess named Maia, who just happened to share a name with the Greek goddess.
Hermes or Mercury was the Messenger God. Hermes, whose Roman name was Mercury, was the messenger god, and the god of travellers. He was said to dress as a shepherd, with wings on his feet and on his cap. His father was Zeus, who coupled with Maia (before his marriage to Hera).
In May, spring is well under way with warm weather and some sunshine. But you may still need a light coat and an umbrella in case of rain. The UK schools break up for the Easter holidays, which last anywhere from 2 weeks to a month.
