THE MONTH OF AUGUST

Across the UK, August temperatures average a daily high of 21 degrees Celsius (69 degrees Fahrenheit) and a low of 12°C (53°F).

Although the weather in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is similar throughout the year, temperatures do start to rise slightly in August. Readings average 19°C at night and up to 26°C in the afternoon, which are both very high temperatures considering this is one of the mid-winter months.

August is the eighth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars, and the fifth of seven months to have a length of 31 days. It was originally named Sextilis in Latin because it was the sixth month in the original ten-month Roman calendar under Romulus in 753 BC, and March was the first month of the year. The name of the month was changed to August in honor of Augustus Caesar in 8 BCE.

It's one of the things "the Romans did for us" - slotting in two extra months - July was named after Julius Caesar and August was named after Augustus Caesar. This nudged the later months along by two and so September became the ninth month instead of the seventh month.

The Gladiolus. The gladiolus is the birth month flower of August, bringing luck to all births in August. Symbolically this flower signifies remembrance, infatuation, and strength of character. Its name comes from Latin's "gladius" meaning "sword" for its sword shaped leaves.

Birth Month Birds - August: the Kingfisher

Here's why August babies are so special: They're going be big at birth. They're going be tall in adulthood. They're less likely to develop bipolar disorders. They feel lucky. They're just more positive. They'll be the youngest (or oldest) in the class.

For those born from August 1st to August 22nd, they are members of the Leo zodiac sign.

As one of the zodiac's most attention-seeking signs, a Leo can most likely be identified as zodiac's most natural "star". People born from August 23rd to August 31st are members of the Virgo sign (more on this next month).
